Subriel Matias vs. Liam Paro: A Clash of Styles

Subriel Matias, the 32-year-old Puerto Rican powerhouse, has bulldozed his way to the IBF junior welterweight title with an impressive record of 20 knockouts in his 21-fight career. Known for his relentless aggression, Matias's only blemish came in a close points loss to Petros Ananyan in 2020, a defeat he avenged with a nine-round beatdown two years later. This has earned him the reputation of being the most dangerous man in boxing.

Most fighters avoid danger, but Liam Paro, a 28-year-old Australian southpaw, embraces it. Speaking from his training camp in Miami, Paro expressed excitement and confidence ahead of his June 15th bout against Matias at the Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruz Abreu in Manati, Puerto Rico.

Paro's Preparation and Confidence

Paro (24-0, 15 KOs) is relishing the challenge. "He’s the most avoided fighter in boxing, but I’m ready to shock the world," Paro said. Training in Miami's familiar climate, similar to Queensland, Australia, has added to his comfort and confidence. "We’ve had an unreal camp. We’re more than ready," he added.

Matias's Reign of Terror

Matias (20-1, 20 KOs), ranked No. 2 by The Ring at junior welterweight, will be making his second title defense. He won the IBF title by defeating Jeremias Ponce, who retired on his stool after being dropped late in the fifth round. Matias's heavy-handed style also overwhelmed Shohjahon Ergashev, another reputed puncher, leading to a mid-round stoppage.

Paro's Strategy

Paro is well aware of Matias's strengths and plans to use his versatility and footwork to counter them. "We know what Matias brings to the table. He’s got one style, and we don’t believe he’ll veer from it. We’re ready for a 12-round boxing clinic if need be," Paro stated. He plans to use angles, fast feet, and good footwork, but is also prepared to brawl if necessary.

Previous Performances

Paro has showcased his adaptability in recent fights. He recovered from an opening round knockdown to out-box Yomar Alamo, demolished Jeff Fenech protégé Brock Jarvis in one round, and delivered a highlight reel knockout of Montana Love. "We can box him on the outside, and get on the inside and get dirty too. I believe I’ve got every base covered," Paro said.

The Challenge Ahead

The fight is being billed as a homecoming for Matias, who hasn't fought in Puerto Rico in nearly five years. A sellout crowd is expected, but Paro is undeterred. "I believe the judging and refereeing will be fair. The rest is up to me," Paro commented. He believes he can outbox Matias and secure a decision if it goes the distance, but is also confident in his power to end the fight early.

Conclusion

Paro is ready to bring the heat and give Matias a tough challenge. "We’ve covered all bases for this camp. We’re ready to surprise him a lot in that ring. Like I do with everyone, I surprise them. And by the time they realize, it’s a bit too late," Paro concluded. The fight promises to be a thrilling clash of styles, with Paro looking to shock the world against the dangerous Matias
