Terence Crawford Downgraded to WBC ‘Champion in Recess’

The welterweight division has just experienced a major shake-up as Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford’s title reign faces an unexpected twist. The WBC has officially downgraded Crawford to ‘Champion in Recess’ due to his inactivity at 147 pounds, as he prepares to move up in weight.

Crawford's Downgrade

The WBC confirmed the decision on Monday, citing Crawford’s upcoming fight at 154 pounds. “The WBC Board of Governors has voted in favor to accept our proud WBC welterweight champion, Terence Crawford, to be placed as champion in recess,” the WBC announced. This decision comes after Crawford’s stunning knockout victory over Errol Spence on July 29, 2023, which unified the welterweight titles.

Upcoming Fight at 154

Crawford (40-0-1, 31 KOs) will next fight at super welterweight against Uzbekistan’s Israil Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs) on August 3 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. This bout, promoted by Riyadh Season, marks Crawford's debut at 154 pounds and will feature Madrimov’s WBA belt and the interim WBO 154-pound title.

Impact on the Welterweight Division

Crawford’s move has led to changes in the welterweight landscape. He was stripped of the IBF belt for not defending against Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and is now placed as WBC ‘Champion in Recess.’ The WBC and WBO had already anticipated his departure by scheduling interim title fights.

Mario Barrios claimed the interim WBC belt by defeating Yordenis Ugas and defended it against Fabian Maidana. Brian Norman captured the interim WBO belt with a knockout of Giovani Santillan. Both fighters are now poised to step up as Crawford transitions to a higher weight class.

Future Prospects

Crawford’s future remains bright as he navigates these changes. With a victory over Madrimov, he could challenge for the full WBO 154-pound title if Sebastian Fundora is stripped of the belt. Additionally, the WBC has sanctioned Madrimov-Crawford as a final eliminator, opening the door for Crawford to compete for the WBC title at 154 pounds as well.

Crawford's next steps will significantly influence both the welterweight and super welterweight divisions. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this transition unfolds and what it means for the future of one of boxing’s most dominant champions.
