Rising Lightweight Star Jhon Orobio Prepares for Second Fight in 12 Days

Rising lightweight prospect Jhon Orobio is set to step into the ring for the second time in just 12 days, facing Jose de Leon Jasso in an 8-round bout at the Montreal Casino in Montreal this Thursday.

Orobio's Rapid Rise

The 20-year-old from Cali, Colombia, relocated to Montreal in March 2023 as a teenager. Since then, he has fought nine times, establishing himself as one of the sport's most active fighters.

"Initially, I was very motivated because this is a big opportunity for me to achieve my dreams and goals," Orobio (9-0, 9 knockouts) told The Ring through Maria-Jose Castellon of Eye of The Tiger. "Now that I'm here, working and fighting, I'm even happier with the team around me, confirming I made the right choice and am in the right place to achieve what I want."

Adapting to a New Life

Colombia and Canada are vastly different in terms of climate and culture, but Orobio has adapted well to his new environment. "It's the dream that drives me to dig deep and achieve my goals – every sacrifice has its reward," he said, showing maturity beyond his years. "The hardest part is missing my daughter and family. I stay in touch with them through calls and WhatsApp."

Orobio, known for his fluid boxing style and impressive power, briefly returned home last October for a pre-arranged tournament. Otherwise, he has remained in Montreal, training under the guidance of esteemed trainer Marc Ramsay.

Training Under Marc Ramsay

Ramsay, who previously discovered and developed Colombian fighters Adonis Rivas and Eleider Alvarez into world champions, saw potential in Orobio early on. "I first saw him in an amateur fight where he won bronze at the World Junior Championship," Ramsay recalled. "He performed well at the Continental Championship, knocking out his first opponent and doing well against the world amateur champion, Alexey De La Cruz, at just 18."

Ramsay did his research and was impressed by Orobio's discipline and potential. "He moved to Montreal and has been very disciplined in the gym. His adaptation to Quebec society has been excellent, and he enjoys Canada."

Orobio's physical development has been significant under Ramsay's tutelage, with the addition of strength and conditioning training. "He moved up three weight classes, from 126 to 130 to 135, and now we're looking at 140," Ramsay explained. "He never did strength and conditioning before, and now I can see his body's reaction. He's getting stronger and more powerful."

Promoter's Confidence

Camille Estephan, head of Eye of The Tiger, is also highly confident in Orobio's potential. "We believe in him very much," Estephan said. "He's a true champion, evident in his habits and discipline. Immigrating to a new country can be challenging, but he's been very good because he listens. Because of his character and talent, we believe he could become a big name in boxing."

Estephan plans to keep Orobio busy, helping him develop further. "His competitive level is extremely high, and I love that. He has grit, and I'm very optimistic about him."

The Upcoming Fight

This upcoming fight against Jose de Leon Jasso is another step in Orobio's rapid ascent in the boxing world. With his dedication, talent, and the support of his team, Orobio is poised to make a significant impact in the lightweight division.

As Orobio continues his journey, he remains focused on his ultimate goal: becoming a world champion. Fans and boxing enthusiasts alike are eagerly anticipating his next performance, which promises to be another exciting chapter in his burgeoning career.
